Global Tool Manufacturer Reduces Cost Per Part by 20% with TRIM® OM 303
The customer is a globally recognized tool and industrial brand that has been in operation for over 175 years. They’re known as one of the world’s largest producers of industrial, consumer, and automotive tools and storage products. Today, their wide-ranging catalog encompasses hand and power tools, and the batteries that power them.
THE CHALLENGE
At their factory, the company performs a complex array of turning, drilling, and tapping operations to create tool shafts and gears. This requires a versatile cutting fluid providing enough cooling and lubricity for the various operations and metals used during the tool manufacturing process - all without staining parts.

The company’s primary goal was to lower the cost per part. Because their operations were already optimized, they identified a cutting fluid upgrade as the best solution. With their previous cutting oil, they used about 15,000 to 20,000 gallons of oil per year. To reduce consumption, the new cutting oil would need to produce less mist and have a longer life. Another objective was to switch to a chlorine free oil to reduce waste disposal costs and environmental impact.
THE SOLUTION
The customer switched to TRIM® OM 303, a chlorine-free straight cutting oil optimized for use with Swiss-screw machines, high-speed turning centers, and machines with multiple stations — which covers everything in their tool shaft and gear manufacturing operation. Incredibly versatile, the product is safe for use on steel and aluminum and steel alloys, as well as copper, brass, cast iron, and bronze. In spite of this chlorine-free formulation, OM 303 continues to outperform traditional chlorinated straight oils, while improving the environmental footprint.
THE RESULTS
After switching to MFS TRIM OM 303, the customer immediately benefitted from the fluid’s longer life, reducing oil consumption and improving productivity from fewer oil changes. Combined with benefits from product and vendor consolidation, the company reduced the cost per part by 20 percent. The chlorine-free, low-foam TRIM OM 303 oil creates less mist, contributing to a better work environment, and it’s easier to wash off of finished parts.
THE NUMBERS
  • TRIM® OM 303 reduced cost per part by 20 percent through reduced usage, vendor and product consolidation, and direct cost savings
  • The chlorine-free, low-foam cutting oil improved the customer’s environmental footprint and shop air quality
