Though they weathered a slight decline in 2019, the industry was expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/boeing.mediaroom.com\/2019-06-17-Boeing-Forecasts-8-7-Trillion-Aerospace-and-Defense-Market-through-2028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rebound quickly in 2020<\/a>, spurred by an increased demand for commercial air travel, defense, and even space tourism.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nBut then the COVID-19 pandemic hit \u2014 and all expectations were shattered.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>Where Aerospace and Defense Stands Post-Pandemic<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nRecovery looked promising for the commercial aircraft market after the hit it took when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchandmarkets.com\/reports\/5007718\/2020-global-commercial-aerospace-outlook?utm_source=dynamic&amp;utm_medium=BW&amp;utm_code=9z54qw&amp;utm_campaign=1366550+-+2020+Global+Commercial+Aerospace+Outlook+-+Key+Developments+to+Watch+Out+For&amp;utm_exec=jamu273bwd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boeing 737 MAX<\/a> was taken off the market. But as COVID-19 shut down a majority of commercial air traffic, airlines grounded most of their fleets \u2014 and carriers cut flight schedules anywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/dsm.forecastinternational.com\/2020\/03\/30\/covid-19-status-and-impact-on-aerospace-defense-manufacturing-and-air-travel-in-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60 to 95 percent<\/a>.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nCurrently, commercial air traffic isn\u2019t expected to return to pre-pandemic levels for as long as <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/us\/Documents\/manufacturing\/us-manufacturing-midyear-2020-aerospace-and-defense-industry-outlook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three years<\/a>. In a post-pandemic world, however, a near equal number of people plan to travel to visit family and friends (57 percent), go on vacation (56 percent), or on a business trip (55 percent).\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nBy contrast, the defense market is expected to stay relatively stable. In the U.S., military projects are still a priority for government officials. Because defense is classified as a critical infrastructure sector, production of defense aircraft continues despite shutdowns. Meanwhile, the market for spacecraft is expected to grow by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mordorintelligence.com\/industry-reports\/spacecraft-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12 percent<\/a> annually from 2020 to 2025, presenting new opportunities for private companies looking for ways to boost revenue.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nWhat\u2019s important to note is the market for commercial aerospace is expected to recover in 2021, reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reportlinker.com\/clp\/global\/665383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$3.3 billion<\/a> by 2025. Companies began canceling orders for aircraft as early as <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/us\/Documents\/manufacturing\/us-manufacturing-midyear-2020-aerospace-and-defense-industry-outlook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 2020<\/a>. One company canceled an order for 75 Boeing 737 MAX planes simply due to decreased demand.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nAirlines are also under pressure to lower operating costs.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThat\u2019s why they will likely modernize existing fleet aircraft to be more fuel-efficient, making up for lost revenue from reduced schedules and canceled flights.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>Passenger Behavior May Change Aircraft Order Types<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nWhen passengers begin flying again, they will likely choose short flights and domestic travel, both for comfort and to comply with various government restrictions. Plus, the average length of a trip is expected to drop by <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/us\/Documents\/manufacturing\/us-manufacturing-midyear-2020-aerospace-and-defense-industry-outlook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8.5 percent<\/a> globally, leading to a new demand for narrow-bodied aircraft and a switch from two-aisle planes to single-aisle planes.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>Potentially Stable Demand for Rocket Launches<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nA combination of public and private sector launches and the recently announced Space Force may stabilize the demand for rockets and associated spacecraft. NASA schedules show a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steady stream of rocket launches<\/a> in 2020 as SpaceX continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">send even more crafts<\/a> into outer space. The most recent launch was just a few months ago, on May 30.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nMeanwhile, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic (the space system division of airline company Virgin Atlantic) are <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/20-space-industry-predictions-for-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">developing their own spacecraft<\/a>, which may fuel more space exploration as they test suborbital spaceplanes. The private space launch market is expected to boom over the next two to five years.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>Military and Defense Spending to Remain Stable<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nIn the U.S., the pandemic has not significantly affected the military and defense sector of aerospace, according to research from Deloitte. There may not be major growth, and the sector may even flatten, but the country is still planning to keep shoring up its defense industrial base.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThe challenge may be in supply chain stability, as the pandemic has caused disruption that may lead to delays and cost overruns. Keep in mind: Composites can be more difficult to machine, particularly those that are composed of layers of materials. This can require using different machining techniques and tooling and cutting fluids. Choosing a specially formulated and tested synthetic fluid is best for composites because it helps inhibit delamination, softening, and surface aberrations, and does not form much foam.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2>Post-Pandemic World Holds Opportunity<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nDespite the challenges created by the pandemic, there will be substantial opportunity for aerospace and defense components manufacturers. It may require shifting operations and focus \u2014 such as from commercial aircraft to spacecraft. Either way, manufacturers should adjust to changing demand and prepare for an uptick in aircraft orders.
